Volvo Penta DPS and XDP duoprop propellers
The Volvo Penta DPS and XDP drives use a duoprop system with two counter-rotating propellers. A front propeller sits on the inner shaft, while the rear propeller is mounted on the outer shaft. This arrangement utilizes the flow behind the first propeller and generates additional thrust.
The system reduces slippage, improves acceleration and ensures stable handling characteristics at higher speeds.
Technical features
Typical characteristics of DPS and XDP duoprop propellers:
-
Propeller set consisting of front and rear propeller
-
counter-rotating duoprop system
-
Mounting on twin propeller shaft
-
Aluminum, stainless steel or composite propellers
-
Various pitch combinations depending on engine power
X-series composite propellers have a tensile strength that is about 10-15 % higher than aluminum and are designed to be corrosion-resistant.
Compatible Volvo Penta drives
Propellers in this category are used with the following Aquamatic sterndrives:
-
Volvo Penta DPS-A
-
Volvo Penta DPS-B
-
Volvo Penta DPS-A1 / A2
-
Volvo Penta DPS-B1 / B2
-
Volvo Penta XDP
These drives are often combined with Volvo Penta gasoline engines such as 4.3 L, 5.0 L or 5.7 L V8 as well as with D3 diesel engines.
Propeller series for DPS drives
Different propeller series are used depending on the drive version:
-
I-series - aluminum propellers for DPS-A
-
IH series - aluminum propeller with helical spline for DPS-B
-
F-series - stainless steel duoprop for DPS-A
-
FH series - stainless steel duoprop for DPS-B
The propellers are always used as a matched propeller pair, as the front and rear propellers together form the optimum pitch combination.
