Switches and switch boxes for Yamaha outboard engines
Switch boxes are part of the remote control of an outboard motor. They make it possible to control engine power and gear selection directly from the helm of the boat. In many systems, the throttle and gearshift are operated via a common lever.
When the lever is operated, the movement is transmitted to the engine via control cables or electronic controls. This allows the engine speed and the gearbox position to be adjusted between forward, neutral and reverse.
Components of a Yamaha gearbox
A typical gearbox contains several controls:

Electrical connections and wiring harness
These components enable complete operation of the outboard motor from the helm.
Many Yamaha control boxes - for example models in the 703 series - also have integrated trim switches and an ignition lock as well as a multi-pin cable connection to the engine.
Control cable and connection to the engine
Mechanical control systems usually use two separate control cables:

These cables connect the switch box to the outboard motor and transmit the lever movement mechanically to the motor.
