Gearbox units for Mercury outboards
The gear unit - often also called the underwater part or gearcase - is located in the lower section of an outboard motor. It transmits the rotary motion of the engine via a drive shaft and gears to the propeller that drives the boat. It also contains the shift mechanism for forward, neutral and reverse gear.
The design of the gear unit enables the engine power to be transferred efficiently to the water and the boat to be steered precisely.

In many outboard engines, the water pump for the cooling system is also integrated in the underwater part. It pumps cooling water through the engine to regulate the operating temperature and prevent overheating.
