Function of the breaker contacts in the ignition system

Breaker contacts (ignition contacts) are mechanical switching points in the ignition circuit of classic engines that interrupt the primary current flow of the ignition coil and thus trigger the ignition spark. They determine the ignition timing and have a direct effect on the engine's starting and running process. Precisely working contacts ensure smooth, stable engine running and prevent spark or power loss.

Design & technical features

A typical interrupter contact set consists of:

  • Contact pair (fixed + movable)

  • Contact spring / holder

  • Adjustable spacers

  • Mounting holes / mounting parts

Important technical parameters are

  • Contact spacing

  • Material coating of the contact surface

  • Spring force of the movable contact side

These characteristics influence spark quality, precipitation stability and durability.

Selection by reference number & motor type

The most reliable way to select the correct contact breaker set is by reference number, as different motor variants can have different contact shapes, mounting patterns and contact spacing.

Recommended procedure:

  1. Check the reference number on the old part

  2. Determine engine type and year of manufacture

  3. Select the appropriate contact set

This reduces incorrect orders and ensures correct functional parameters.

Installation & maintenance instructions

The following applies when replacing breaker contacts:

  • Switch off the engine and turn off the ignition

  • Remove old contacts and clean contact surfaces

  • Fit new contact set with correct spacing

  • Set the contact gap according to the manufacturer's specifications

  • Test the engine and check the ignition timing

Incorrect setting can lead to misfiring, loss of power or rough engine running.

Adjustment & ignition timing

Breaker contacts often need to be readjusted after installation:

  • Adjust contact gap according to specification

  • Check the overall ignition timing with a tester

  • Carry out idling and load tests

Precise adjustment maximizes efficiency, reduces consumption and ensures stable combustion.

Typical fault patterns & diagnosis

Common symptoms of defective or incorrectly set contacts:

  • Starting problems or difficult starting

  • Unsteady idling

  • Engine juddering

  • Increased fuel consumption

  • Loss of power / misfiring

Regular checks and timely replacement prevent these problems.
