Ignition

Ignition for Mercury & Mariner outboards

The ignition generates the electrical spark that ignites the fuel-air mixture in the engine. Several components of the ignition system work together to achieve this, including ignition coils, control units and spark plugs. In this category you will find ignition spare parts for Mercury and Mariner outboard engines of various engine series and model years.

Ignition for Mercury and Mariner outboard engines

The ignition system of an outboard engine generates the electrical spark that ignites the fuel-air mixture in the cylinder. Without this spark, combustion cannot take place and the engine will not start.

In Mercury and Mariner outboard engines, several components work together to trigger and control the ignition process. These include electrical components, sensors and mechanical elements of the engine.

Typical ignition components

The ignition system of an outboard engine may contain the following components, depending on the engine series:

  • Ignition coil

  • CDI module or ignition control unit

  • Trigger coil

  • stator

  • Ignition cable

  • Spark plugs

The ignition coil increases the electrical voltage so that a sufficiently strong spark is generated at the spark plug.

How the ignition system works

During operation, the stator generates electrical energy while the flywheel provides the necessary drive. The voltage generated is controlled by the ignition module and passed on to the ignition coil. The ignition coil amplifies the voltage and transmits it to the spark plug, where the spark is generated.

This spark ignites the fuel-air mixture in the cylinder and starts the combustion process.

Typical causes of ignition problems

Faults in the ignition system can manifest themselves through various symptoms:

  • Engine does not start

  • Unsteady engine running

  • misfiring

  • Loss of power

Possible causes are damaged ignition coils, defective ignition modules or worn spark plugs.

Selecting the right ignition parts

The selection of an ignition spare part is based on several technical features:

  • Engine series

  • Engine power (hp)

  • Year of manufacture

  • Mercury part number

Many ignition components differ depending on the engine generation and engine type.
