Thermostats for Mercury and Mariner outboard engines
The thermostat is a valve in the cooling system of an outboard engine. It opens or closes depending on the engine temperature and thus controls the flow of cooling water through the engine.
When starting, the thermostat initially remains closed so that the engine reaches its operating temperature more quickly. As the temperature rises, the valve opens and allows cooling water to circulate through the engine to stabilize the temperature.

The cooling system of a Mercury or Mariner outboard engine consists of several components:

The water pump pumps cooling water through the engine, while the thermostat regulates the flow depending on the temperature.
Temperature ranges of thermostats
Thermostats are designed for specific opening temperatures. Depending on the engine series, different temperature ranges are used, for example around 120 °F to 160 °F (approx. 49-71 °C).
The correct temperature range is important to ensure that the engine works efficiently and does not overheat.
Signs of a defective thermostat
A defective thermostat can fail in two states:

closed → cooling water does not circulate, engine overheats

open → engine does not reach optimum operating temperature
Both faults lead to inefficient engine operation and can cause damage in the long term.
