Distributor caps for OMC boat engines
The distributor cap is a central component of the ignition distributor in classic petrol engine ignition systems. It sits on the ignition distributor and contains the connections for the ignition cables as well as the central connection to the ignition coil. Inside are contact surfaces via which the high voltage is transmitted to the individual cylinders.
This distribution of the high voltage creates the ignition spark at the respective spark plug, which ignites the air-fuel mixture in the cylinder.
How the distributor cap works
In the ignition system, the ignition coil generates a high electrical voltage. This voltage reaches the distributor cap via the central high-voltage cable.
Inside the cap is the distributor finger (rotor), which rotates with the distributor shaft. As it rotates, it conducts the high voltage to the contacts of the distributor cap, which are connected to the ignition cables, one after the other. This ensures that each cylinder is ignited at the right time.

Distributor caps are exposed to electrical and thermal loads. Sparkovers, moisture or deposits can cause the contacts inside to wear out over time.

Distributor caps as spare parts in the ignition system
