The thermostat is a temperature-controlled valve in the cooling water circuit that regulates the flow between the engine block and heat exchanger/radiator. At low temperatures, the valve remains closed in order to bring the engine up to operating temperature more quickly. Once the set temperature is reached, the thermostat opens, allowing cooling water to flow and preventing overheating.
