Function & significance of exhaust hoses and exhaust bellows

Exhaust hoses and exhaust bellows are flexible connecting elements between the cylinder head exhaust manifold, downpipe, exhaust pipe and stern drive or stern drive-integrated exhaust pipes. They compensate for movements, vibrations and thermal changes in length and reliably guide exhaust gases out of the engine compartment. Without secure connections, vibrations, heat and movement can lead to leaks or material failure.

Different designs & areas of application

Volvo Penta exhaust hoses and bellows are available in various designs, depending on

  • Engine configuration - Inboard engines, Sterndrive-Z drives

  • Exhaust system layout - engine exhaust manifold, down-pipe, tailpipe

  • Flexibility & diameter - depending on system pressure and running conditions

  • Material composition - high-temperature resistant rubber compounds, reinforcement layers

Examples from the spare parts world show exhaust bellows for Z-drives such as SX, DPS, DP-G/DPX, DPH/DPR as well as classic designs for inboard engines.

Selection by reference number & engine type

The correct exhaust hose or exhaust bellows should be selected using the reference number, as parts have the same functions but vary in length, diameter, connection geometry or, in the case of radial drive applications, in shape and flap integration. Known reference numbers or OEM numbers are categorized by system type and engine:

  • Exhaust bellows 3850426 - for SX/DPS-Z drives

  • Exhaust bellows 3860384 - for DP-G/DPX-Z drives

  • Exhaust bellows 3588753 - for DPH/DPR-Z drives

  • Various 876631/876633 types - for older drive variants

Recommended selection logic:

  1. Determine the reference number of the old part

  2. Check engine type & year of manufacture

  3. Identify exhaust system configuration

  4. Select suitable hose/bellows

Structured matching reduces incorrect orders and installation work.

Accuracy of fit according to exhaust system/configuration

Exhaust hoses and bellows must fit mechanically and thermally to the respective exhaust and drive configuration. Differences arise due to

  • Length and bending radii

  • Connection diameter & seal design

  • Flexibility vs. rigidity

  • Integrated flaps or clamp sets

Only precisely fitting parts ensure tight connections, minimize flue gas leaks and prevent overheating of adjacent components.

Installation & maintenance instructions

The following applies during installation:

  • Remove old components - including clamps and seals

  • Clean the connection surfaces

  • Use new hose clamps

  • Check installation position & bending radius

  • Test fit and tightness (e.g. visual inspection with the engine running)

Vibrations and thermal expansion require sufficient play, but also a tight fit - incorrect installation can cause exhaust gas leakage, loss of power or damage to neighboring lines.

Typical signs of wear & damage

Common signs of wear or defects are

  • Cracks, fissures or porous rubber compounds

  • Leaks at connection points

  • Deformed or kinked hoses

  • Vibrations or unusual noises

Regular visual inspections as part of maintenance detect early ageing and prevent consequential damage.
