Trim and tilt systems for Johnson and Evinrude outboard engines

The trim and tilt system of an outboard motor makes it possible to adjust the angle and height of the motor while driving. This allows the boat drive to be optimally adapted to different driving conditions, such as high speed, rough water or shallow water.

By adjusting the engine angle, the propeller thrust is optimally aligned, which can improve speed as well as fuel efficiency and driving stability.

Structure of a trim and tilt system

A typical trim and tilt system on Johnson and Evinrude outboards consists of several components:

  • electric trim motor

  • Hydraulic pump and oil reservoir

  • hydraulic cylinders (trim rams)

  • Electrical relays and switches

The electric motor drives a hydraulic pump that feeds hydraulic oil into the cylinders. This raises or lowers the outboard motor.

Function of the trim on the boat drive

The trim position influences the position of the boat in the water and the direction of the propeller thrust. If the motor is trimmed outwards, the bow of the boat is raised and the speed can increase. If the motor is trimmed inwards, the bow is lowered and the boat becomes more stable at low speed.

The tilt system raises the engine higher than the trim range and is often used during transportation, mooring or when sailing in shallow water.

Maintenance of trim systems

Trim systems work hydraulically and electrically. Typical wearing parts are trim motors, hydraulic seals, relays or switches. Problems in the trim system can become apparent, for example, through slow movement, unusual noises or a motor that can no longer be raised or lowered.

Regular maintenance and the replacement of damaged components ensure that the trim system functions reliably and that the engine can be optimally adjusted at all times.

In this category you will find trim and tilt spare parts for Johnson and Evinrude outboard engines that are required for maintenance, repair and reliable operation of the boat drive.
