Carburetor for Yamaha outboard engines
The carburetor is part of the fuel system of an outboard engine. Its task is to mix air and fuel and feed the mixture into the engine. A correct air/fuel ratio is necessary for efficient combustion and reliable engine operation.
In the carburetor, air flows through a constricted area, the so-called Venturi channel. This creates a vacuum that draws fuel from the float chamber via jets into the air flow. The resulting air-fuel mixture then enters the engine cylinders.

Mixture control screws
The throttle valve controls the amount of air and therefore the engine power. The choke enriches the mixture with additional fuel during a cold start.
Carburetor in the Yamaha outboard engine
Many smaller or older Yamaha outboard engines use carburetors for fuel metering. When starting, a choke mechanism is often used, which briefly enriches the mixture so that the engine starts even at low temperatures.
At low engine speeds, a separate idle jet takes over the fuel supply. These jets are very small and can easily become blocked by dirt in the fuel system.
