What is 2-circuit cooling (closed cooling)?

The 2-circuit cooling system, also known as a closed cooling system, separates the internal engine cooling system from the seawater circuit. While seawater flows directly through the engine block in open cooling, an internal coolant circulates in the engine in the closed system. The seawater only cools the internal coolant via a heat exchanger.

This system separation increases operational safety and reduces material-related corrosion damage.

Advantages of a closed cooling system

Converting to a 2-circuit cooling system offers clear technical advantages:

  • Reduced corrosion wear in the engine block

  • Constant operating temperature

  • Improved long-term stability

  • Fewer deposits in the cooling system

  • Optimized temperature control under continuous load

  • Increased engine service life in saltwater operation

The Closed Cooling System is a sustainable protective measure, especially in salt water applications.

Components of a 2-circuit conversion kit

A typical Mercruiser Closed Cooling conversion kit contains

  • Heat exchanger

  • Thermostat or thermostat housing

  • Coolant hoses & connections

  • Gaskets & O-rings

  • Fastening elements

  • Sensors or adapters if necessary

The exact equipment varies depending on the engine series, displacement and year of manufacture.

Selection by reference number & engine type

The following parameters are decisive for correct allocation:

  1. OEM reference number

  2. Engine type (e.g. V6, V8, diesel or petrol)

  3. Year of manufacture / engine series

  4. Existing cooling configuration

Even within a series, there may be differences in connection diameters, heat exchanger size or sensor position. Matching by reference number minimizes incorrect orders.

Installation & technical requirements

The following points must be observed when installing a Closed Cooling conversion kit:

  • Complete draining and cleaning of the old cooling system

  • Professional installation of all connections

  • Use of suitable coolant according to specification

  • Venting of the system after installation

  • Temperature and leak test during trial run

Professional installation is crucial for long-term functional reliability.

Maintenance & typical error patterns

Closed cooling systems also require regular inspection:

  • Check coolant level

  • Check heat exchanger for deposits

  • Inspect seals regularly

  • Monitor temperature values

Typical problems with incorrect installation or maintenance:

  • Overheating

  • Pressure loss

  • Leaks

  • Coolant mixing
