Function of the ignition coil in the ignition system

The ignition coil is an electromechanical component that transforms the battery or on-board voltage into a significantly higher high voltage, which is required to ignite the fuel-air mixture. It is the central energy source for the spark plug and directly influences the starting behavior, smooth running and performance of the engine.

Structure & technical features

A typical ignition coil consists of:

  • Primary winding - absorbs low voltage

  • Secondary winding - generates high voltage

  • Core & insulation system - optimizes magnetic flux

  • Connection connectors - suitable for the ignition system

High voltage, temperature and moisture resistance is crucial in the maritime environment.

Differences & variants

Mercruiser ignition coils vary depending on the ignition architecture:

  • Coil-per-plug - individual coils per cylinder

  • Distributor coil systems - central coil with distributor

  • Hybrid systems - combination of electronic modules

Each variant has different connection and performance parameters, which must match the respective ignition architecture.

Selection by reference number & engine type

The correct ignition coil should be selected using the OEM reference number, as electrical values, terminal shapes and coil configurations vary. The engine type and year of manufacture also provide information on the correct assignment.

Recommended selection steps:

  1. Determine the reference number on the old part or parts list

  2. Determine engine type & year of manufacture

  3. Select the right ignition coil

This structured allocation reduces incorrect orders and installation problems.

Installation & maintenance instructions

The following applies when replacing an ignition coil:

  • Disconnect the battery before working on the ignition system

  • Check the connector plug and contacts are clean

  • Install coil without tension or voltage

  • Test ignition after installation

Incorrect installation can lead to malfunctions or spark loss.

Diagnosis & typical fault patterns

Common symptoms of defective ignition coils are

  • Starting problems or misfiring

  • Unsteady idling

  • Loss of power

  • Misfiring

  • Increased fuel consumption

Targeted diagnosis and timely replacement improve reliability and engine running.
