Ignition for Yamaha outboards
The ignition system of an outboard engine generates the spark that ignites the fuel-air mixture in the engine. This spark is created by high electrical voltage which is conducted into the cylinder via the spark plug and triggers combustion.

Electronic ignition systems (CDI)
Many Yamaha outboard engines use a CDI ignition (Capacitor Discharge Ignition). Electrical energy is first stored in a capacitor and transferred to the ignition coil at the right time. This creates the high voltage for the ignition spark.
The ignition timing is controlled via a trigger coil or an electronic engine management system, which synchronizes the spark output precisely with the engine position.
