The cooling system of an outboard engine ensures that the operating temperature of the engine remains stable. Most outboard engines are water-cooled and use a water pump to draw in water from the environment and pass it through the engine. The water absorbs heat and is then dissipated to the outside.

Water pump and impeller
The water pump is usually located in the underwater part of the outboard motor. It is driven by the drive shaft and pumps cooling water into the engine.
The impeller is the central component of the water pump. It is a flexible rubber impeller that transports water through the cooling system. As the impeller is a wearing part, it should be checked regularly and replaced if necessary.
Thermostat in the cooling system
The thermostat regulates the flow of cooling water in the engine. When starting, it initially remains closed so that the engine reaches its operating temperature more quickly. As soon as the temperature rises, the thermostat opens and allows cooling water to circulate through the engine.
This regulation keeps the engine temperature in the optimum range.
