Fuel pumps

Fuel pumps for Yamaha outboards

Fuel pumps transfer fuel from the tank to the engine and ensure the supply of fuel to the carburetor or injection system. Depending on the engine type, mechanical diaphragm pumps or electric fuel pumps are used. In this category you will find fuel pumps for Yamaha outboard engines of various engine series and model years.

Fuel pumps for Yamaha outboard engines

The fuel pump is part of the fuel system of an outboard motor. Its task is to draw fuel from the tank and transfer it to the engine. A constant fuel supply is necessary to ensure that the engine starts correctly and runs stably under load.

In modern outboard engines, the fuel system consists of several components such as a fuel filter, low-pressure fuel pump, high-pressure pump and injection system. The pump delivers the fuel through these components to the injection nozzles or the carburetor.

Mechanical fuel pumps

Many smaller or older Yamaha outboard engines use mechanical diaphragm pumps. These pumps are driven by pressure pulses from the engine. The movement of a flexible diaphragm draws in fuel and transports it to the engine.

Electric fuel pumps

Electric fuel pumps are used in modern fuel injection engines. These pumps generate a constant fuel pressure, which is required for the injection system. A stable pressure supply is important to ensure that injection nozzles work correctly.

Signs of a defective fuel pump

Typical symptoms of a defective or weak fuel pump can be

  • Engine starts poorly or not at all

  • Loss of power at high engine speeds

  • Engine runs unevenly at idling speed

  • Engine stalls under load

If the pump does not deliver enough fuel, the engine cannot reach its full power.

Selecting the right fuel pump

The selection of a suitable fuel pump is based on technical engine data:

  • Yamaha engine series

  • Engine power (hp)

  • Year of manufacture

  • Yamaha part number

Fuel pumps differ depending on the engine generation, fuel system and pump type. For many Yamaha outboard engines, there are different versions for different power ranges and engine series.
