Z-drive Seals

Volvo Penta Sterndrive seals

Volvo Penta Sterndrive seals seal critical transitions in the Z-drive and transom area and prevent water and oil loss. Precisely fitting seal kits, O-rings and housing seals according to reference number, engine type and drive series ensure reliable sealing of shaft, bearing and flange surfaces. The right seal selection optimizes performance, reduces damage and supports long-term operational reliability in maritime applications.

Function & importance of the star drive seals

Sterndrive seals are central components in Volvo Penta's Z-drive that ensure sealing between moving and stationary components. They prevent both water ingress into critical assemblies and oil leaks between the gearbox, drive and mirror plate. An intact sealing system protects bearings, shafts and internal components from loss of lubricating oil, corrosion and premature wear.

Types of seals in the Z-drive

Various seal types are used in the Sterndrive range, including

  • Housing seals / flange seals - seal larger contact surfaces between drive components

  • O-rings / round seals - seal gaps, bushings and shaft connections

  • Simmerrings / shaft seals - prevent water and lubricant leaks on rotating shafts

  • Complete seal kits - bundle all relevant sealing elements for an overhaul

Each seal plays a role in the interaction of water, oil and motion sealing in the Sterndrive system.

Selection by OEM reference number

The most reliable assignment is made using the OEM reference number of the old part or from the parts catalog. Even small deviations in diameter, cross-section or material can prevent a seal replacement or lead to leaks.

Recommended selection logic:

  1. Check OEM reference number

  2. Identify drive series (e.g. SX, DPS, DPS-G, DPH, DPR)

  3. Match engine type & year of manufacture

  4. Select suitable gasket(s)

This will ensure that all sealing surfaces are sealed correctly and no leaks occur.

Accuracy of fit: Drive series & year of manufacture

Volvo Penta Sterndrive seals vary depending on:

  • Drive series/Z-drive variant

  • Year of manufacture & serial number

  • Housing and shaft geometry

Only OEM-compatible seals ensure a precise fit, stable installation and permanent sealing effect across all pressure and temperature ranges during operation.

Installation & maintenance instructions

Please note when replacing star drive seals:

  • Remove old seals completely - no residue

  • Clean and deburr sealing surfaces

  • Position new seals correctly

  • Use sealant/liquid sealant as specified (if required)

  • Install with defined torque

  • Perform function and leak test after installation

Incorrect installation can lead to oil and water leaks, which can result in expensive consequential damage to bearings and gearboxes.

Typical signs of wear & damage

Common signs of worn Sterndrive seals are

  • Water in the gearbox oil (milky oil)

  • Oil leakage at the drive base or mirror area

  • Leaks at shaft bushings

  • Corrosion around sealing surfaces

Regular maintenance and visual inspection as part of seasonal or annual maintenance detect early damage and prevent major repairs.
