Function & importance of sensors in the Volvo Penta system

Sensors are central measuring devices that monitor operating conditions in the Volvo Penta engine and its systems. They record physical variables such as temperature, pressure, angle and gas composition and deliver them in real time to control units and displays. Precise signal transmission by sensors is crucial for engine control, efficiency, emission control and safety.

Temperature & Pressure Sensors

Engine temperature sensors:
Measure coolant or oil temperature to prevent overheating and aid thermal control.

Oil pressure/fuel pressure sensors:
Monitor pressure conditions in the oil or fuel circuit and report deviations for diagnostics or protective functions.

Trim & angle sensors

Trim sensors and angle sensors detect the position of the trim drive or drive deflection. They supply control and display units with data on the exact angular position and support automatic trim adjustment and driving system integration.

Lambda probe & exhaust gas sensors

Lambda sensors measure the oxygen content in the exhaust gas and support mixture control for efficient combustion and optimized emission values. Exhaust gas sensors can be part of diagnostic or monitoring systems.

Selection by OEM reference number

The right sensors should be selected using the OEM reference number, as sensors differ in terms of design, connection, measuring range and electrical interface. Even visually similar sensors can have different characteristics. An OEM comparison ensures

  • correct connector geometry

  • suitable electrical signal curve

  • exact measured values in the intended range

Recommended procedure:

  1. Check OEM reference number

  2. Identify motor type/drive series

  3. Match year of manufacture

  4. Select suitable sensor

Accuracy of fit: engine type & year of manufacture

Volvo Penta supplies different sensor variants depending on the engine series, ignition/control concept and electronics generation. Deviations in measuring range, connection or calibration require OEM-compatible sensors to ensure error-free communication with control units and safe operation.

Installation & diagnostic tips

Please note when replacing sensors:

  • Use clean plug contacts - Avoid corrosion

  • Check the pin assignment - rule out pin errors

  • Observe the measuring range/OEM specification

  • Perform diagnostics after installation - Clear fault memory, check function

Incorrect connection or unsuitable sensors lead to incorrect measured values, diagnostic errors or protective shutdowns.
