Function of the thermostat in the cooling water circuit

The thermostat is a central control component in the Volvo Penta cooling water system. It controls the flow of coolant between the small and large cooling circuits and ensures that the engine quickly reaches its optimum operating temperature.

When closed, the coolant remains in the engine block, allowing the engine to heat up quickly. When the defined opening temperature is reached, the thermostat opens and opens the way to the heat exchanger or seawater circuit. This ensures a constant temperature under changing load conditions.

Precise temperature control is crucial for

  • optimum combustion

  • reduced fuel consumption

  • Stable oil viscosity

  • protection against thermal overload

Opening temperatures & variants

Volvo Penta thermostats are designed for different opening temperatures depending on the engine type and cooling concept. Depending on the model, these are often in the range of approx. 71°C to 87°C.

Deviating opening values can lead to

  • Operating temperatures that are permanently too low

  • Increased soot formation in diesel engines

  • Increased wear

  • risk of overheating

overheating risks.

It is therefore essential to comply with the exact specification in accordance with OEM requirements.

OEM reference number as the safest adjustment

A thermostat should always be selected using the OEM reference number. Identical housing shapes may have different opening temperatures or seal diameters.

Recommended procedure:

  1. Determine the OEM reference number on the old part or in the parts catalog

  2. Check motor type and serial number

  3. Take the year of manufacture into account

  4. Select a suitable thermostat including gasket

This structured selection reduces incorrect orders and ensures functional stability.

Fitting accuracy & installation instructions

The following points must be observed when replacing a thermostat:

  • Depressurize the cooling circuit

  • Clean the sealing surfaces completely

  • Use a new seal or O-ring

  • Observe the installation direction

  • Bleed the cooling system correctly

Incorrect installation can lead to air pockets, inaccurate temperature control or leaks.

Typical error patterns

A defective thermostat is often indicated by

  • Overheating under load

  • Engine does not reach operating temperature

  • Strongly fluctuating temperature display

  • Increased fuel consumption

  • Insufficient heat output

Early replacement prevents consequential damage to the cylinder head, gaskets or heat exchanger.
