Function of the water pump in the cooling water circuit

The water pump is the heart of the Volvo Penta cooling system. It ensures the continuous transportation of the coolant through the engine block, cylinder head and heat exchanger. Depending on the engine concept, either sea water (open system) or coolant (closed system) is pumped.

Fault-free pump function is crucial for

  • constant operating temperature

  • Avoidance of overheating

  • Protection of seals and bearings

  • Stable performance

Without sufficient pumping capacity, thermal overload can quickly occur.

Differences: Raw water pump vs. coolant pump

Seawater pumps (raw water pumps)
Pump water directly from the water through a heat exchanger and exhaust system. Usually equipped with impeller technology.

Coolant pumps (fresh water pumps)
Circulate antifreeze coolant in a closed circuit within the engine.

Both pump types differ in design, sealing system, flow rate and connection geometry. Mixing them up can lead to malfunctions or installation problems.

Volvo Penta water pumps are clearly defined by OEM reference numbers. These contain all technical specifications regarding housing shape, connection diameter, bearing and delivery rate.

Recommended selection strategy:

Accuracy of fit & installation instructions

The following points must be observed when replacing a water pump:

  • Depressurize the cooling system
