Function & purpose of sacrificial anodes

Sacrificial anodes are specifically softer metal elements that absorb electrical currents before they attack other technically critical components. They "sacrifice" themselves through controlled corrosion to ensure protection for hull, drive and underwater parts.


Why corrosion protection is necessary in water

In water - especially in salt water - electrochemical processes create electrical potential differences between different metals. Without suitable protection, this leads to

  • Pitting or crevice corrosion

  • Material erosion on important components

  • Weakening of drive parts or hull structures

  • Expensive repair measures

Sacrificial anodes reduce these effects through defined metallic sacrificial reactions.


Materials: Zinc, aluminum & magnesium

Marine sacrificial anodes are typically made of:

  • Zinc: Standard material in saltwater environments

  • Aluminum: Lightweight, long-lasting option - good for medium to large boats

  • Magnesium: Particularly effective in fresh water

Each material has different electrochemical properties that should be selected depending on the environment and water quality.


Areas of application in boat and propulsion systems

Sacrificial anodes are used wherever metallic components are exposed to direct water contact:

Installation & replacement instructions

The following applies for effective protection:

  • Installation in corrosion-critical zones: Underwater surfaces and drive parts

  • Secure fastening: corrosion-resistant screws/nuts

  • Clean contact surfaces: ensure corrosion-free anode support

  • Regular replacement: when ≥ 50 % of the material has been sacrificed

Proper installation extends the protective effect and reduces the risk of damage


Maintenance & visual inspection

Regular visual inspection ensures reliability:

  • Check degree of wear: ≥ 50 % wear → Replacement

  • Check for corrosion damage to components

  • Expose and clean contact surfaces before reinstallation

  • Annual check before the start of the season

Early detection prevents serious corrosion damage.
