Sensors and encoders for Mercury and Mariner outboard engines
Sensors and encoders record physical values in the engine and convert them into electrical signals. This data is passed on to the engine control unit or instruments in the cockpit. This allows operating states to be monitored and engine functions to be controlled.
Typical sensors in the outboard engine

These sensors provide measured values for engine management and display instruments.
Temperature and pressure sensors
Temperature sensors measure the engine temperature or the cooling water temperature. The measured values are passed on to display instruments or warning systems. Many sensors work via a change in resistance, which is influenced by the temperature.
Pressure sensors monitor oil pressure or water pressure in the cooling system, for example.
Trim and position sensors
Position sensors detect mechanical movements or positions. One example is the trim position sensor, which measures the angle of the outboard motor and transmits the information to the trim instrument.
