What exactly is the task / function of the component?
The starter converts electrical energy from the vehicle electrical system into starting torque and engages in the starter drive via pinions or mechanics. It must bring the engine up to starting speed quickly enough for ignition and mixture formation to start safely.
How can you recognize a defect / typical symptoms?
Typical symptoms are slow revving, only clicking magnetic switch, freewheeling without engagement or heavily heated cables. Worn brushes, a defective magnetic switch or damaged pinion teeth are common fault symptoms.
How do you check / test the component?
Check the battery voltage under load, the voltage drop on the positive and earth cables and the start signal on the magnetic switch. When removed, the free movement of the pinion, bearing condition and engagement behavior can be checked using a bench test.
When should it be replaced?
The starter should be replaced if the starting speed is too low, the contacts are burnt, the pinion is jammed or the teeth are damaged. Preventive replacement is usually not interval-based, but is advisable in the event of a high number of starts or salt water corrosion.
How do you check compatibility?
The OEM number, on-board power supply voltage, mounting pattern, starter length, pinion or ring gear alignment and the position of the electrical connections are important. The direction of rotation and any heat shields or intermediate plates must also be identical.
