FAQ

What exactly is the task / function of the component?
The starter relay or solenoid switch switches the high starting current from the vehicle electrical system to the starter. This enables the starter motor to bring the engine up to starting speed so that ignition and mixture formation can start safely.

How can you recognize a defect / typical symptoms?
Typical symptoms are a clicking magnetic switch without cranking, the engine not turning over, sporadic starting problems, heated cables or a starter that only responds intermittently. Common causes are burnt contacts, corrosion, faulty earth connections or an internally defective relay.

How do you check / test the component?
Check the battery voltage under load, the voltage drop on the positive and earth cables and the start signal on the solenoid switch. In addition, plug contacts, screw connections and earth points should be checked for corrosion, tight fit and contact resistance.

When should it be replaced?
Replacement is advisable if the starter is not reliably activated despite an intact battery, the relay only clicks, contacts are burnt or severe corrosion is visible. When used in salt water, replacement can also be more economical than troubleshooting aged contacts in the event of recurring starting problems.

How do you check compatibility?
The decisive factors are the OEM number, on-board power supply voltage, connection configuration, mounting pattern and the specific engine version. For Yamaha, Mercury, Suzuki, Parsun, Tohatsu and Johnson / Evinrude / OMC, the original number fitted should be compared with one of the reference numbers given.
