Function & importance of bilge pumps

Bilge pumps are used to remove water from bilge compartments, technical and engine areas in the boat. They protect against unnecessary water ingress, reduce the risk of corrosion and ensure operation in the event of condensation, leaks or splashing water. A functioning bilge pump increases safety, reduces maintenance costs and can prevent damage in an emergency.

Pump types: automatic, manual & electric

The most common pump types include

  • Automatic bilge pumps: activate when the water level rises due to built-in floats or sensor systems

  • Electric pumps: Operated via on-board electrics and offer high pumping capacity

  • Manual hand pumps: As a backup or in the event of an electrical failure, independent of on-board voltage

Each type of pump has advantages and disadvantages in terms of ease of use, power requirements and installation situation.

Areas of application in everyday boating

Bilge pumps are used for

  • Removing water from bilge spaces after diving or waves

  • Condensate and spray water management in the engine compartment

  • Safety in the event of leaks or water ingress

  • Covering seasonal accumulations of moisture

Correctly dimensioned pumps contribute to operational safety and comfort.

Selection criteria: Performance, voltage & flow rate

Relevant for the right pump selection are

  • Flow rate (liters per hour): Matched to boat size and expected water volume

  • Operating voltage: 12 V, 24 V or hydraulic-electric hybrid systems

  • Pump type: Automatic, electric or manual

  • Installation space & accessibility: Fastening options and bilge space arrangement

Only systems tailored to requirements ensure reliable water drainage.

Accessories & installation parts

Bilge pump accessories include:

  • Hoses & overflows: suitable for the pump and bilge line

  • Pump brackets & fastening material: screws, clips, brackets

  • Float switches & level sensors: for water level measurement with automatic pumps

  • Non-return valves & strainers: for system stabilization and clogging reduction

These components support installation, operation and maintenance.

Installation & maintenance instructions

The following points should be observed during installation and operation:

  • Correct positioning: lowest point of bilge space to ensure maximum water drainage

  • Clear cable routing: route power supply safely, take fuses into account

  • Regular function check: test run of pumps and float switches

  • Cleaning the suction area: remove dirt, seaweed or deposits

Regular maintenance increases reliability and reduces the risk of failure.

Typical faults & problem solutions

Common faults can be:

  • Blockage due to dirt or fibers: prevent by regular cleaning

  • Electrical connection failures: Check cables, fuses, connections

  • Failure of the float switch: check function and replace if necessary

Targeted diagnosis helps to remedy the problem quickly.
