Ship anodes as rudder anodes, shaft anodes, hull anodes

Universal marine anodes are sacrificial anodes made of magnesium, aluminum or zinc for the cathodic protection of underwater and drive components. They protect hulls, shafts, screws, drives and technical components in fresh, brackish or salt water against electrolytic corrosion.

Function & purpose of universal marine anodes

Marine sacrificial anodes prevent galvanic corrosion by acting as "electrochemical sacrifices". They are made of a more reactive metal than the components to be protected. Instead of corroding engine, hull or propulsion parts, these anodes dissolve in a controlled manner - essential protection for all underwater metal parts.

Electrochemical corrosion in water

In the maritime environment, electrochemical voltage differences arise between different metals. Without suitable protection, these differences can lead to:

  • Pitting or crevice corrosion

  • Material erosion in drive and hull parts

  • Weakening of shafts, bearings or fastenings

  • Damage to stainless steel or aluminum components

damage to stainless steel or aluminum components. Sacrificial anodes neutralize these potentials and provide lasting protection for structural components.

Materials: magnesium, aluminum & zinc

Marine anodes are available in three main materials:

Magnesium

  • Optimal for fresh water

  • Highest electrochemical potential

  • Strong cathodic effect with low conductivity

Aluminum

  • All-rounder for brackish and salt water

  • Lightweight, durable option

  • very good protection with a long service life

Zinc

  • classic for salt water

  • Stable protective effect with high conductivity

The choice of material depends on the type of water and application.

Water types & suitable anode selection

  • Fresh water: magnesium anodes are optimal

  • Brackish water: aluminum preferred

  • Salt water: aluminum or zinc depending on conductivity

The right choice of material ensures the most effective cathodic protection and optimum service life.

Areas of application for universal anodes

Universal marine anodes protect:

  • Hull underwater surfaces

  • Shafts, propeller axles & couplings

  • Outboard and inboard drives

  • Saildrive or Z-drive housings

  • Rudder, keel or technical underwater parts

They can be used flexibly and are suitable for many boat and drive systems, regardless of make or model.

Selection criteria: Size, connection & mounting

The following are relevant for the right anode:

  • Surface area & dimensions: matched to contact surfaces

  • Connection type: screw, bolt or mounting flange

  • Material: suitable for the type of water

  • Contact surfaces: clean and conductive for safe current output

Correctly dimensioned anodes ensure lasting protection and minimize incorrect orders.

Installation & replacement instructions

  • Clean contact surfaces: free from oxidation/dirt

  • Marine-grade fastenings: corrosion-resistant screws

  • Positioning: close to the surfaces to be protected

  • Regular replacement: as soon as ≥ 50% of the material has been sacrificed

Timely replacement ensures continuous corrosion protection.

Maintenance & service life

Recommended measures:

  • Visual inspection before the start of the season

  • Intermediate inspection during heavy use

  • Check for material erosion

  • Clean the contact surface before reinstalling

This keeps the protection active and components remain corrosion-free.

Preventive corrosion protection

Universal marine anodes are part of a comprehensive corrosion protection concept. In combination with:

  • suitable electrochemical planning

  • insulating washers or sacrificial insulation sets

  • regular maintenance

the service life of the entire underwater and drive technology is significantly increased.
