Function & principle of sacrificial anodes

Sacrificial anodes are used for cathodic corrosion protection in a maritime environment. They are made of a more reactive metal than the components to be protected on the Honda outboard engine - as a result, they corrode in a targeted manner and absorb electrochemical currents before critical components are attacked.

Electrochemical corrosion in the maritime environment

Electrochemical currents are generated in water due to different metal potentials. Without suitable protection, this leads to

  • Pitting or crevice corrosion

  • Material erosion on underwater and drive parts

  • Damage to shafts, bearings or couplings

  • Weakening of the component structure

Effective cathodic protection minimizes these risks.

Materials: magnesium, aluminum & zinc

The following materials are used for Honda marine sacrificial anodes:

Magnesium

  • Highest electrochemical potential

  • Optimal for fresh water

  • Particularly effective with low water conductivity

Aluminum

  • Versatile all-round solution

  • Suitable for brackish and salt water

  • Good durability

Zinc

  • Classic for salt water

  • Proven protection with high conductivity

The choice of material depends on the type of water and use.

Types of water & optimum choice of material

  • Fresh water: Magnesium anodes are optimal

  • Brackish water: aluminum recommended

  • Salt water: aluminum or zinc depending on conductivity

Magnesium offers the best protection in fresh water due to its high electrochemical potential.

Areas of application for Honda marine outboards

Sacrificial anodes are mounted on:

  • Underwater housings of outboards

  • Shaft and propeller axles

  • Contact surfaces on the hull in the area of the drive zones

  • Other underwater surfaces at risk of corrosion

Targeted placement ensures the protection of sensitive alloys.

Selection criteria: Material, size & connection

The right anode selection depends on

  • Water type (fresh, brackish, salt water)

  • Material (magnesium, aluminum, zinc)

  • Size & surface to cover the contact zone

  • Mounting type: screw or bolt connection suitable for the Honda component

  • Compatibility with the alloy of the components to be protected

Only correctly dimensioned anodes guarantee permanent protection.

Installation & replacement instructions

  • Clean contact surfaces: free of dirt or corrosion layers

  • Corrosion-resistant fastening parts: screws/nuts suitable for marine use

  • Positioning: close to the component to be protected

  • Replacement: as soon as ≥ 50% of the anode has been sacrificed

Professional installation and timely replacement ensure continuous protection.

Maintenance & service life

Recommended maintenance includes:

  • Seasonal visual inspection before use

  • Regular inspection during intensive use

  • Cleaning the contact surfaces before reinstallation

  • Checking adjacent components for corrosion

Early replacement of the anodes maintains protection in the long term.

Consequences of a lack of protection

Without suitable sacrificial anodes, the following can occur

  • Corrosion on outboard housings

  • Material erosion on shafts or fastening elements

  • Damage to bearings, couplings or underwater surfaces

  • Increased repair and maintenance costs
