The control unit processes sensor signals and uses them to control the ignition, injection, protective functions or actuators of the engine. It is therefore a central control and monitoring module of the system.
How do you recognize a defect / typical symptoms?
Defects are indicated by a refusal to start, emergency running, communication errors, several implausible fault codes or failures of various actuators without a common peripheral fault. Moisture, salt corrosion or thermal damage to connectors and housing are also critical.
How do you check / test the component?
First of all, the supply voltage, earth points, fuses, CAN and diagnostic signals and the input signals from the sensors are checked. Only when the peripherals, wiring harness and plug connections are proven to be in order can the control unit itself be considered the cause of the fault.
When should it be replaced?
Replacement is advisable in the event of an internal defect, water damage, burnt electronics or a malfunction that can no longer be reproduced after the peripherals have been excluded. A control unit is not normally replaced as a preventative measure, except in the case of known serial problems or corrosion damage.
How do you check compatibility?
The OEM number, software/calibration status, engine type, serial number, connector configuration and emission or performance-specific variant codes are required. For many systems, it must also be clarified whether coding or initialization is necessary.
